Neu Cerberus
SCULPTURE - 21 x 11.5 in., steel, acrylic, vellum, acetate
A research-creation project that explores the various social, spiritual, and
mythical dynamics applied to doors and thresholds throughout history.
The piece, a door decorated with apotropaic devices (objects and symbols that are used to ward off
evil), blends elements of tradition, folklore, and contemporary technology to draw an evolutionary line
between ancient beliefs and modern security practices.
From institutions, private homes, and corporate offices, the door’s design and the tools of its guarding
carry inherent messages and implications that reflect its surrounding culture. Using images, symbols,
and writing, the piece illustrates the different aspects of the doorway as a symbol of positive
progression and change, a barrier or dead-end, and a place of judgement and anxiety between those inside
and outside.
